City of Burgos
On the banks of the Arlanzón River lies one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Founded in 884 by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, it is brimming with places of interest and charming corners:
The Cathedral of Saint Mary A World Heritage Site and a prime example of Gothic architecture, it is the most representative monument in Burgos, beneath which rest the remains of El Cid Campeador and his wife, Doña Jimena. Founded by Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor of Aquitaine, it is the ideal place to admire magnificent architecture.
The Arch of Santa María Former seat of the Burgos city council. Inside, among other historical artifacts, a mural by Vela Zanetti is preserved.
Plaza Mayor Without a doubt, the best way to experience the city of Burgos is to stroll through its historic center. The main square, Plaza Mayor, is the central hub for many of its narrow streets. Also known as Plaza del Mercado Menor (Small Market Square), due to the commercial activity that took place there, the square hosted Burgos’s main market from the Late Middle Ages. Essential goods were sold there, and popular festivities were held there.
Espolón Promenade If there’s one thing the people of Burgos can be proud of, it’s the abundance of fountains, gardens, and green spaces throughout the city. Some of the most emblematic promenades include: the Paseo de la Isla, the Paseo de la Sierra de Atapuerca, the Paseo de la Quinta, the Forest Theme Park, the Fuentes Blancas Natural Park, the Castle Park, and others.
The Walls The city was completely walled, and numerous remains of it are still preserved today, among which the following stand out: the Paseo de los Cubos, the Arco de San Gil, the Arco de San Martín, the Arco de San Esteban…
The Castle It is the origin of the city. Dominating the heights, it was simultaneously a fortress, a home, and a wall.
The Charterhouse of Miraflores Royal palace of Henry III, later given to the Carthusian order. It combines utility and beauty.
The Monastery of Las Huelgas Founded by Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor of Aquitaine, it is the ideal place to admire splendid architecture.
The Museum of Human Evolution It offers a general overview of the Sierra de Atapuerca and its unique ecosystem, which preserves a continuous archaeological and paleontological record spanning the last million years. Fossils from the Atapuerca sites are on display.
The Museum of Burgos An extraordinary venue that houses valuable pieces and artistic collections from various eras.
